Stories That Heal Vol. 1 Bridging the Abyss by Nan Brien and Cathy Miyata. (audiocassette) self-produced, 1997. 76 mins. $10

Storytellers Nan Brien and Cathy Miyata have been successfully presenting healing story seminars around southwestern Ontario for the past few years. The seminars help participants find personal metaphors as they are guided toward growth and healing. Most of the stories in this live recording
are used in their seminars.

On side one the listener hears Nan Brien tell a story based on a Jewish parable, in which a traveller on a journey is delayed by a series of problems which must be solved. She also tells The Tiger's Whisker, adapted from the Korean folktale, and a modem folktale, called The Lost Funnybone, about an aging couple finding renewal.

Side two has Cathy Miyata telling a delightfully humorous and touching personal story Plums of My Heart, and The Wish Fulfilling Tree, an adaptation of a Hindu tale.

There is a fine balance to this tape, a balance of humour, thoughtfulness, and wisdom in the stories, and a balance between the voices and styles of the tellers. Nan's voice is rich and full, Cathy's is lighter and naturally expressive. Both are excellent tellers with smooth delivery and top-notch pacing and timing.

The tellers were joined by flautist David Gerry whose music added colour to the tellings and cleansed the palate between stories. The title identifies this as Volume 1. I shall be watching
for others in this series of healing stories.
