Abegael Fisher-Lang, far from her Nova Scotian roots, is a longtime BC storyteller with a passion for the mythopoetic. She has performed widely in festivals and conferences, taught pedagogical storytelling to educators, and served as artistic director for Vancouver International Storytelling Festivals, World Storytelling Day and numerous artistic community initiatives.
Committed to education through imagination, Abegael is on the faculty of the Vancouver Waldorf School. As a certified life celebrant, she helps families and communities to create story-based ceremonies that honour life passages.
For the past ten years, Abegael has met other Vancouver tellers each spring to retell a cultural epic over an entire weekend; these epics have included the Welsh Mabinogion, the Finnish Kalevala, the Arabian 1001 Nights, the Tibetan Gesar of Ling, and Celtic Wonder Tales, among others. This year's epic will be Sundiata, the Epic of the Lion King, from Old Mali.
Abegael met the renowned Kereshmeh Ensemble while telling Zal and Rudabeh from the Persian epic Shahnemeh last autumn.
She was recently honoured to have been invited to speak the mystical poetry of Jelaluddin Rumi, ensouled by such extraordinary music, on January 10, 2010 at the Chan Centre with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Kereshmeh Ensemble.
