Canadian Children’s Book Week 2010 - Deadline January 15, 2010
SC-CC Participation Guidelines for Storytellers

Applications for the next Canadian Children’s Book Centre (CCBC ) Book Week storytelling position are now being accepted. This tour, scheduled for early November 2010, is organized by the CCBC. This non-profit organization is dedicated to promoting and encouraging the reading, writing and illustrating of children’s books.

Tellers are paid between $150 and $250 for each performance. As well, costs for travel, accommodation and meals are covered. Expenses the storyteller might incur at home, childcare or loss of salary for example, are not covered.

Eligibility:

You may apply to be a touring storyteller if you:

  • Are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Have been a member of SC-CC for a least one year and remain a member in good standing during the year of the tour, and are already, or willing to become, a member of the CCBC.
  • (Visit www.bookcentre.ca for more information about the CCBC.)
  • Do not sit on the SC-CC Board of Directors.
  • Can demonstrate wide experience telling stories to groups of children.
  • Have not toured as part of SC-C from 2005 - 2009 . (Past Book Week tellers are eligible to reapply after five years have passed.)
What will be expected of a touring storyteller:
  • That you support the objectives of CCBC and of TD Canadian Children’s Book Week.
  • That you be available to tour tour throughout Canadian Children's Book Week and are willing and able to travel to whatever part of Canada you are assigned by CCBC.
  • That you have stamina and flexibility. CCBC and the communities you visit will try to arrange as many performances for you as possible and you may be travelling considerable distances as well. You will often not know exactly what to expect in terms of audience – how many, how old, and how experienced in listening to storytelling.
  • That you are able to work with a wide range of children and young people. The majority of bookings are with elementary and middle schools, but high schools are also involved and non-school venues may include all ages. However, CCBC does try to accommodate your age preferences as best as possible
  • That you write a final report for CCBC as well as an article summarizing your experiences to be used by both CCBC and SC-CC
The application process consists of four parts:
  1. A CV of not more than one page in length that focuses on your storytelling experience with children. (If more than one page is submitted, only the first will be given to the jury.)
  2. A bio of between 150 and 250 words that outlines your storytelling background and experience. This should be suitable for inclusion in CCBC’s newsletter.
  3. Two current letters of reference, written within the last two years - dated no earlier than Jan 15, 2007
    • One from someone who has observed you storytelling in circumstances most like the ones you will encounter on the Book Tour (ie, groups of children in schools or libraries).
    • Another from a storyteller familiar with your work with children.
Note: we will not accept reference letters from current SC-CC Board or jury members.
  4. A description of three storytelling programmes you could do on the tour, one for each of two different age groups, and one for a mixed age audience. Although a wide range of experience is necessary, you need not have experience with all age groups to apply; if chosen, CCBC will match you with your preferred ages
As our jurors are based in different provinces we cannot, at this time, handle photographs, tapes, cds, dvds, or other promotional materials - please send just four copies of the application materials as described above.
